No surprise ATWT (sympathy nomination) .Days not getting one(writing sucks)

Suprise : OLTL,arguably the worst soap in daytime
That's so funny because I'm finding OLTL to be the best US soap currently airing! I do think, judging by the ratings, that more people agree with you than with me! I agree about ATWT and DOOL though!

I actually feel that this DAYS is very similar to JER. There are a lot of the same elements: triangles all over the place, secrets, outrageous storylines (i.e. the sarcophagus)...except without all of the suspense that made DAYS in the 90s so great, even when all of the storylines seemed like they were taking forever to reach their climaxes. In other words, this is what I feel JER's first go-around would have been like if it was boring.

I couldn't disagree more! JER's stories were SO dragged out, there were rarely any surprises or actual twists you didn't see coming from a mile away, and characters repeated the same trite dialogue day in and day out ad nauseum. Not to mention he constantly used the same 6-8 characters, played out their storyline, rinsed, and repeated. I'm not seeing that here.

I have been genuinely surprised by many of the turns that the stories have been taking (Anna kidnapped Sydney! Caroline switched the paternity results!). I also think the triangles are FAR more balanced right now than they ever were with JER. There was always a clear winner and rooting couple then- Austin & Carrie, John & Marlena, Bo & Hope, etc.... I don't see that here. I'm still not quite sure who I want together in the Philip/Melanie/Nathan/Stephanie quad- I just know I want none of them with Stephanie. I was all for Melanie/Phillip from the beginning, but more and more, I find myself warming to Melanie/Nathan. Same with Hope/Bo/Carly. I'm not sure who my preference is. Even EJ/Sami/Rafe or the brewing EJ/Nicole/Brady triangles don't have a clear winner- just ask the warring fanbases.

I still don't understand what this has to do with JER, though. There are some fans who loved his work who are enjoying the show now and conversely some fans who hated his work who also hate the show now. It's not just people who loved JER 93-97 who hate the show now at all. I'm just not seeing the correlation.

The correlation is that this version of DAYS is traditional soap, not dumbed down, and there isn't a whole lot of attention-grabbing, shock value storylines. Maggie Horton never carried her own storyline under JER, let alone was involved in a love triangle. Kate never did anything more than obsess over Sami and her children, especially after Koslow took over. Victor did NOTHING, Stefano was a caricature, and the villainous, devious Vivian everyone is remembering only existed in the Buried Alive storyline, which lasted all of 6 months. After that, she was turned into a bigger cartoon than she is now. JER changed the DAYS landscape and the landscape for all of daytime during his run. The reigns have been pulled in now and we're getting back to the basic elements that made DAYS, well, DAYS! Virtually none of those qualities were there under JER, which is why I'm saying that fans who started watching during his era would probably be a lot less likely to be enjoying the show now than those that started watching before his time.

I have to disagree. I tried watching DAYS as recently as a couple of weeks ago and I was bored silly. I don't know how people who are still watching the show do it, because it's just that boring. Not to mention the production values are terrible, the writing is lackluster, most of the acting is not good. I don't feel that it's character-driven at all. These writers are changing characters to fit the plot all the time (Caroline, Chloe, the list goes on). Most of the characters are not interesting to me, and that includes characters that I've traditionally loved. And while I appreciate that characters are being used prominently when they haven't been in a while, the way that they've been used is stupid. And, to me, that's just as bad as not using them at all.

I don't see terrible production values or lackluster writing AT ALL. Quite the opposite. The dialogue, pacing, and day-to-day writing are quite polished IMO- something happens every day. Plus, there are undertones in every scene and characters actually have some nuance now. Caroline? Chloe? Those characters were dull as dishwater for YEARS and I don't feel they've severely changed. Caroline has never been Alice Horton, she's always been sort of a bitch, and with Shawn Sr. no longer there to rein her in, I think her behavior makes total sense with all she's been through. As for Chloe, I felt her sluttiness starting when she was vascillating between Brady & Philip, it's just gotten worse over time. But I feel that she has her backbone back now, as evidenced in her scenes over the summer with Carly and then later, Nicole. For the first time EVER, I actually enjoy Chloe as a character. Nadia Bjorlin is beautiful, if not the most talented actress, but she's quite effective when her strengths are written to. IMO, that's what's happening here.

What characters do you feel that were once under-utilized aren't being used properly in their stories now? Frankly, I think Maggie and Victor are being used quite effectively, those being the two characters that come to mind who fit that bill. I also think Vivian has been used quite well in the past 6 months- I LOVED the role-reversal of the sarcophogus and I think she is the villainous that she always should have been. She's comic relief as well, which Louise Sorel excels at, and she doesn't have a chip in her tooth nor is she dressed up like a box of french fries. There was nowhere to go but UP with her!

One thing is for certain, though. I find none of it to be boring. Far from it. Boring to me is knowing how a storyline is going to turn out from jump and having to watch it drag for months or even years on end, with no real movement. Boring is watching the same characters repeat the same damn thing over & over again every day. Boring is characters being written without their brain, and vets being brought back with great fanfare, only to be written as pods. Boring is the same characters doing the same things to their same enemies over and over again in story after story and never wisening up.

DAYS is none of that now. It's a grown up show that you have to pay attention to every day and if you miss a day, you do actually miss something. Characters are interacting with each other brilliantly, there is subtext in nearly every scene, actors are playing the nuances of their characters, and most of the time, they command attention. Most importantly, the writers are actually playing the BEATS of all of their stories, missing virtually none of them. That's something that hasn't happened on this show for the better part of 20 years and I, for one, am LOVING it!

How is that? Did Sami, EJ and Rafe suddenly die? Because anytime I ever tune in (which granted is very rarely) they are ALWAYS on.

Wonderful post.

It just keeps getting better and better too. The show feels like a soap opera with CHARACTERS. Real characters. It's not a couple oriented show anymore. Yes, there are couples but the show keeps an open mind now. It writes stories and lets the chips fall where they may. If they see potential to return to another pairing or try some other pairing, they go there. If it's a mistake, they go back and try to fix it but not by gutting the story and rushing it to an end. They take what they have, even if it's not very good, and turn it into something that actually works. This regime has done that time and time again. The first half of this year wasn't good but they took all that and made some great stories out of it this Fall and are setting up even better for the future.

Didn't you watch the first few years? Chloe had heart, feelings, real emotional reactions and real emotional depth. She was smart too.

Chloe's been reduced to a bobble-headed bimbo since her return though. And the only emotions she ever feels are arousal and whine.

For 6-10 years, the only charcters we EVER saw in storylines were John, Marlena, Kristen, Bo, Hope, Austin, Carrie, and Sami. That was IT!

Yes, Sami/EJ/Rafe are frontburner and have been for quite some time, but they aren't the only characters with stories.

Vivian, Victor, Maggie, Daniel, Chloe, Philip, Melanie, Nathan, Stephanie, Caroline, Hope, Bo, Carly, Nicole, Brady, Stefano, Kate- all of them have stories of their OWN right now and are featured regularly. Hell, many of those characters are on just as much as Safe/Ejami lately and have been for quite some time. The show plays like an ensemble.

Quite frankly, I'd say the sarcophogus story was the "A" storyline of the fall more than I would the Ejami/Safe stuff was. I think people just like complaining about them and focusing on them. Yes, they are the weak link on the show right now, but with so much else going on, it doesn't bother me as much.

I did. She was a bore and was quite generically written. I also remember, after her first 6 months on the show, she got a makeover and all of those qualities vanished.

I can think of alot of beats that weren't played. Most recently Chad getting the birth certificate.

LOL at Days being a grown up show.
